Revolution of foreign language teaching, the combination of old-school and innovative ICT methods

In our first Erasmus+ project as a coordinator we had to face the biggest challenge no one ever expected in the 21st century. A pandemic that had a huge impact on the whole world and was never foreseen by us, made us completely rethink our views about digital teaching and learning. At the moment of writing this project and winning the grant we didn’t have the faintest idea how actual the topic of our project would be in a year. Having to cope with a pandemic made the idea of digital learning into reality in a blink of an eye. All schools worldwide were transferred to online teaching and learning, making the goal of our project so real as never before.

After holding the short term staff meeting we had to cancel all our student mobilities for the next one and a half year. Trying to adapt to the new situations, we strengthened our online presence with our partners by exchanging ideas regularly, holding online meetings, preparing the material and hoping for the best to be able to have physical activities in the very near future.

Fortunately, a year later the international pandemic situation made it possible for us to travel and also welcome our friends in our country. At the first 2 mobilities in Italy and Germany we didn’t have the chance to stay at host families, but in Portugal and Hungary we could do this important part of the project as well.

Our project is innovative because it allows us to share our ideas and to experience the methodology of other European countries at the same time.

There have been numerous changes and reforms in the educational and economical fields in Hungary and therefore there is a severe need for high-quality and modern education of maths, science and foreign languages. Just as our partners, we wanted to maintain or even increase our attractiveness within the European Union and to achieve this by applying methods and techniques which prove to be motivating for students. MOTIVATION is the key. Teachers nowadays have to be modern and attractive to students and the digital world is one of the best attraction for them. Top priority is to use ICT in foreign language learning and to make the students more comfortable with different types of digital technologies. This goal was reached by making them more aware of the diversity in European countries, broadening their horizons and improving their language learning skills by working on different types of projects with the students of the partner organisations. We learned to use several new platforms, applications and websites, such as Quizlet, Kahoot, Socrative, PuppetPals, BookCreator, LEGO Storytelling and we tried to combine them with the old-school methods of language teaching which we are so fond of and don’t want to skip or lose.

To sum up, the severe interest in modern digital technology was used as a key factor for maintaining the motivation and enthusiasm of our students, even also for those who are in danger of early school leaving due to lack of motivation or disadvantaged family background. We were aware, that social media plays an important role in their life and since it has started to integrate itself into nearly all fields of life from private life to education, work and businesses, and pupils love to pass their time on these platforms, we were hoping that we could possibly benefit from this interest. That’s why we decided to use these tools to raise the motivation and knowledge level of our students with the tools that they already love to use each and every day.

Since this project was realized in international teams, it led to an additional advantage: during the short term visits to another country, participants were able to experience multiculturalism, which naturally led to understanding, accepting and respecting cultural diversity.

Learning, Teaching, Training Activities

Short-term joint staff training events

At this event all of the members of the project were present including the Italian, the Portuguese, the German and the (host) Hungarian group of teachers. Each of them arrived at the place of venue in time and the project could be started on Monday 7th of October 2019 as planned. The project week included several hours of project meetings in the mornings at the school buiding and common activities, such as sightseeing in Dunabogdány and Budapest together in the afternoons and evenings. The first project day started out with the individual presentations of each country and introductions. This way the participants had the chance to visit our school and meet our students, which was a great, lovely experience for all of them. The participant countries agreed on the project details and planned the short-term exchanges of pupils. We agreed on designing a common logo to use on the flyers of the project and agreed on the dates and exact number of participants.

Before the exchange in Italy “Fun and engagement, all partners teams collected data and did statistics related to best games used in their schools and did research to find similar data in their country. They also identified the ideal curriculum based on games and made a report containing all this information. The meeting started with the project opening day with the participation of the director, colleagues and the participation of the Hungarian, Portuguese and German partners schools. After the opening ceremony the participants introduced their schools, cities and countries by a presentation and videos. Afterwards some Italian students and teachers showed the main building to the partners. The Italian learning, teaching and training activities were focused on Games. Students worked in different workshops indoor and outdoor: - „Coding and English: a perfect combination” - „Creativity and stop motion” in language laboratory- During the visit to the Salt museum, the Lagoon Stagnone, Mothya Island, Villa romana and Museum Baglio Anselmi students and teachers were divided in groups and engaged in a didactic treasure hunt on the Island, using mobile phones, Learning App, Google forms. The visit in Trapani with its important towers of the city, where it is still possible to see (fully functional) one of the oldest astronomical clocks in Europe and the museum of Illusion gave one more time the opportunity to learn physics laws, new foreign lexicon enjoying and playing. They also played football in the municipality playground. The last day in the ICT laboratory of G. Nosengo school students and teachers in groups created an online diary about their Italian days using Book creator application. Short-term exchanges of groups of pupils_ Germany

Before the exchange in Germany “Analog to Digital foreign language acquisition” the German students created different fun games on how to use English in daily life. The meeting started with the project opening day guided by the principal, teachers, students and the participants of Hungary, Portugal and Italy. After the opening ceremony the participants introduced their schools, cities and countries by presentations and videos. Afterwards there was a guided tour for the teachers through the school building offered by German students. Meanwhile the students of the partner schools worked together with German students in the workshop “PuppetPals”. Moreover, the students didn’t only work in digital workshops to broaden their English skills, but also in analog workshops such as a classical, analogous actionbound to find their way around town. While visiting the Wilhelma, attending the handball tournament, DreamBowl and Tripsdrill, students and teachers were always divided into different kinds of groups in order to get the chance to talk to each other and practice their skills analogously and digitally. All these impressions had to be collected on MS Teams for the final workshop on iMovie. Unfortunately the partners couldn’t be hosted by families since the restrictions due to the pandemic of hosting anyone was abolished only shortly before the exchange. There was not enough time to reschedule the situation. However, friendships for the next stops in Portugal and Hungary had already been made and students already knew who would host them next time.

Short-term exchanges of groups of pupils_ Portugal

The mobility of Marinha Grande, Portugal, "Modern versus traditional skills" - as part of the project of Revolution of foreign language teaching. Between 29th of May and 3rd of June the Hungarian, Italian, German and the Portuguese teams of students and teachers participated in the mobility (“Antique methods vs modern methods”). Each of them arrived on sunday 29th of May. The teams meet at Lisbon, the capital and arrived at school by bus at the same time where the hosting families were waiting. The project week included project meetings and workshops at school and other activities outside the school – develop the English and learn in different ways. After the official reception, the participant students did a peddy paper around the historical center explaining the meaning of the buildings. Then, the Mayor of the city received the different schools in the main and historical room explaining the development of the city. The students had to present the cultural, historical ant turistic places with the ESL method - English as a Second Language (ESL), method is indeed very efficient. It is immersion, in which the student immerses himself in a new culture and learns from these new references. Therefore, exchanges are important in teaching English (and other languages), and a resource should be encouraged by the teacher. In addition, there are schools that use advanced tools to make their students feel in an English-speaking situations. In the workshop “making stories-who am I?”, it is suggested to create them based on their perception of themselves, with antique methods and modern methods. They had tried to use “Powtoon”/modern ways of telling stories and paper and color pens/traditional one. They survive also a surprise activity that was traditional games with all the countries together (very fun!). Another way of learning was the Workshop in Aveiro “How to make it” and the visit to the “Portuguese Venice”. Another great way and modern one to learn is playing. So, they went to an interactive museum and made some videos. The mobility ended with a goodbye dinner with the hosting parents. They could talk to teachers and also practices the English and tell stories about the week with another “son/daughter” at home.

Short-term exchanges of groups of pupils_ Hungary

The final mobility of the project in Dunabogdány, Hungary. In the middle of July from 10-15 we hosted our friends from 3 different partner countries we have already visited in the project before. We could welcome them as long known friends, even between the kids there was already a strong bond of friendship with some, so it made the cooperation a whole lot easier. Our goal was to present the Hungarian ways of foreign language teaching, to assess what we have used recently and what we have already used for years. The combination of old-school and innovative methods. Our workshops based on the using of a variety of web tools (Quizlet, Socrative, Kahoot) and mobile apps, as well as Lego Storytelling application and Lego blocks. After welcoming all guests, Monday we had a meeting at school where we introduced our school and the Hungarian school system. After that the Mayor’s office welcomed our guests at the Mayors office and gave them their gifts. Our first workshop started with a sightseeing tour to Szentendre. Here the kids had the opportunity to get to know the application called “GooseChase” which is a treasure hunt application. On the second day we had our second workshop for getting to know Quizlet and register our partners so that they can benefit from it even after returning home. In the afternoon we visited Budapest and did a 3 hour sightseeing tour with our partners. On Wednesday we had our third workshop with LEGO Storytelling. The students were building stories from LEGO blocks and created stories, wrote dialogues and the older ones even had the opportunity to shoot a movie or a short video/stop motion. On Thursday we visited Esztergom. On Friday we had our last day of workshop where we introduced KAhoot and Socrative applications to our partners. Unfortunately all our partners had to return home a day earlier due to cancelled flights, so the goodbye party was held on Thursday evening at the school yard. Students had the opportunity to finally stay at host families which made the stay so special and they could benefit from it. It seemed impossible during pandemic times. Everyone returned to their homes safe and sound, with long lasting memories.
